After decades of tireless service to global public health, Dr. Philippe Barboza, WHO Cholera Team Lead and Head of the Secretariat for the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC), will retire at the end of June 2025. His departure marks the end of an era shaped by steadfast leadership, unrelenting commitment, and lasting progress in the global effort to end cholera.

As Secretariat Lead of the GTFCC, Dr. Barboza became a steadfast advocate for equity, reminding the global community that cholera is not merely an epidemiological phenomenon—it is a symptom of systemic injustice. Beyond his scientific expertise and pragmatic diplomacy, his deep humanity and remarkable ability to bring people and institutions together will be profoundly missed.

Dr. Barboza’s legacy is reflected in a cholera control movement that is now stronger, more coordinated, and more committed than ever. As he steps away from his formal role, his influence will continue to be felt—in every outbreak averted, every child protected, and every nation that moves closer to a cholera-free future.

The GTFCC extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Barboza for his extraordinary service and leadership. Though this marks the close of one chapter, his impact endures, and the work he inspired will carry on.

Merci, Dr. Barboza. You leave us inspired, empowered, and more determined than ever to #EndCholera.
