6th Meeting of the GTFCC Working Group on Oral Cholera Vaccine

December 3 - 4, 2019, Geneva (Switzerland)

Summary

The 6th Meeting of the Global Task Force for Cholera Control (GTFCC) Working Group on Oral Cholera Vaccines (OCV) took place in Geneva on December 3-4, 2019.

The meeting objectives were to review the implementation of OCV campaigns; to discuss renewal and harmonization of the current mechanisms for accessing the OCV stockpile; to review the current and future supply of, and demand for, vaccines; and to refine and prioritize the OCV research agenda, including for the development of new vaccines.

After assessing the achievements of the past year, discussing feedback from countries representatives about their OCV campaign in depth, and hearing updates from partner agencies, vaccine developers, researchers and funders, the group defined a list of tasks to be addressed in the coming year. These included:

  • achieving consensus on the conditions and procedures for accessing the OCV stockpile;
  • reviewing success stories of OCV implementation and using them to help support further campaigns; especially improve timing for campaign implementation
  • continuing work on the integration of OCV with provision of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH);
  • strengthening cholera surveillance in countries and globally and the monitoring and evaluation of OCV campaigns;
  • further development of the OCV research agenda in partnership with the Wellcome Trust, and identification of further opportunities to implement research;
